Katana Expertise has made me think about some other base weapons that could use improvement, and the one that comes most to mind is the Bastard Sword. We all want to like the Bastard Sword; it’s an archetypal heroic weapon, it’s ostensibly got utility, does good damage, and it looks darn cool. But it’s not worth a Exotic Weapon Proficiency unless you’re abusing size rules. Here’s a pseudo-feat patch for the Bastard Sword.

    Hand-And-A-Half Training
Prerequisites: BAB +1, The ability to use the Bastard Sword as a two-handed martial weapon.
You gain the ability to use a Bastard Sword in one hand, as if you possessed the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword) Feat. In addition, you deal an additional +1 damage whenever you wield a Bastard Sword in one hand. This bonus to damage increases to +2 if you wield a Bastard Sword in two hands. Possessing this Feat counts as possessing the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword) Feat for all other abilities and effects.

If you ever gain the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword) Feat the benefits from this Feat improve. You gain a +1 bonus to AC whenever you wield a Bastard Sword. When you wield a Bastard Sword in both hands, you are considered wielding a Light Shield for effects and abilities which require you to use a Shield, including the ability to make a Shield Bash. If you already have an ability which allows you to use your Bastard Sword as a Light Shield, such as the Zweihander Sentinel’s Armament Shield feature, your Shield Bash does damage as if it were two sizes larger. This stacks with any other effect which increases the size of you or your weapons.

If this seems legit, I might make more Exotic Training Feats that incentivize spending a Feat or two on an Exotic Weapon that is otherwise underwhelming.

Oooo…Stylish. Maybe their could be more than give some of the eastern weapons their old 3.5 capabilities back (kusarigama and meteor hammer come to mind).

If we did something like this it should probably be done for a bunch of weapons, to make them all a little more interesting – which is quite a project.

Sounds like a challenge! But I understand.

I’ll probably churn more out, since I haven’t heard any complaints about this one. It was fun to think about how I can make a bland weapon better. Because everyone wants cool weapons.
